Why this ambition is important for Bath and North East Somerset
Students in
Bath
and North East Somerset perform well in examinations, especially at GCSE
level. It is important to continue to drive up standards across the board
and also focus on those young people who, for whatever reason, leave
school with few or no qualifications.
The percentage of young people in further and higher education in
Bath
and North East Somerset is above the national average, but the percentage
in trade-based training is low. In 2001, a survey of employers listed
basic computer and customer service skills as being essential.
So, we support the Learning and Skills Council’s approach to improving
the skills of local workers and people’s basic skills. We also want to
make sure that all residents can play a full role in social,
economic and cultural life by developing and using their skills. This
means developing community education, and meeting changing local needs for
involvement in educational and cultural activities, for example, to meet
the needs of the increasing numbers of older people in our community.
